Carol Burns Burland, born November 10, 1937, in Jackson, Mississippi, passed away, Saturday, December, 28, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She was a devoted wife, mother, “Yia Yia,” and friend, who touched the lives of many with her warmth and generosity.
Carol graduated from Central High School in Jackson and went on to enjoy a fulfilling career spanning 25 years in various business office roles following her move to Mobile, Alabama, including positions at Merchants National Bank, Joe Bullard Oldsmobile, Thoss Sporting Goods, and Julius T. Wright Girls School. In 1990, she followed her passion for cooking and entertaining by opening The Tea Room in Fairhope, Alabama, a testament to her love for bringing people together over good food and conversation. She and her husband, Joe were co-founders of Tannin development in Orange Beach, Alabama.
A faithful member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Mobile, Alabama, and later the Holy Trinity-St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church in Jackson, Mississippi, Carol’s life was deeply rooted in her faith and community.
She is survived by her son Charles “Charlie” Joachim Burland (Virginia), daughter Patricia “Tisha” Burland Koury (Paul), grandchildren Alexander “Alex” Joachim Campbell Burland, Gregory “Greg” Charles Vourloumis (fiancée Marika Papadopoulos), Magdalen “Maggie” Carol Koury, and Joachim “Joe” Michael Koury. She is also survived by her sister Hazel Jean Burns Holmes, brothers James Campbell Burns and Gary Allen Burns; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Carol was predeceased by her beloved husband Joachim "Joe" Dennis Burland, parents Clyde Campbell and Hazel Coker Burns, brother Clyde Welton Burns, and sisters Delores Burns Hammons, and Peggy Burns.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2025 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 50 South Ann Street in Mobile, AL. Visitation will be one (1) hour prior to the start of the service (10 a.m.). Interment at nearby Magnolia Cemetery.
Carol’s legacy of love, hospitality, and devotion will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. May her memory be eternal!
