

Reverend Father Charles Joseph McCabe – Born April 22, 1949 in Mobile, AL to James McCabe and Rose Mary Walsh McCabe. His Father’s parents were Joseph McCabe and Catherine Heyer McCabe. His mother’s parents were James Willis Walsh and Edna Wolfe Walsh. He was the fourth child of eight children. All attended parochial schools in Mobile. Little Flower, and McGill and Toolen.
There was a strong connection to many priests in Mobile due to his father, “Jim’s” endless work for the diocese. He grew up loving the Blessed Mother. The shrine in the yard and daily family Rosary after dinner gave him his foundness for Our Lady. He led pilgrimages to Lourdes and Fatima and Medugorje. Fr.”Chuck” McCabe carried on his father’s interest in Ham radio and helped families and homeschoolers set up communication systems in Hanceville and Cullman, where he retired.
He passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023 in Birmingham, AL. at the Noland
Acute care part of St Vincent Catholic Hospital. The Chaplain, Fr. Paul, helped to bless him with his visits and the Holy Mass at the Chapel in the Hospital. In his room he had the opportunity to view the Altar for his silent adoration 24/7 His Sisters, were with him as he passed peacefully at 3:20 a.m. during the prayers of the Divine Mercy he taught to all he would meet.
He was very active with the Knights of Columbus, and The Legion of Mary in Mobile and other parishes. He started several Cenacles of the Marian Movement of priests in the Hanceville area. He studied with the Jesuits for over ten years. He pronounced his first vows in the Society of Jesus at Grand Coteau, LA in the chapel of St. Charles College on August 15, 1982.
He was ordained at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile on May 30, 1992. He served as Associate Pastor at St. Margaret Parish in Bayou La Batre June 18, 1992; he was Pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Mobile July 8, 1994; Associate Pastor at St. Dominic Parish in Mobile June 27, 1998; Administrator at St. John Parish in Ozark June 10, 1999; Sabbatical to Institute for Continuing Theological Education in Rome January 12, 2006; Associate Pastor of St. Ignatius Parish in Mobile June 12, 2006; and Parochial Vicar at Holy Spirit Parish in Montgomery October 18, 2008. He served as Chaplain to Dominican Monastery in Marbury and Prison Ministry in the Montgomery area where he offered Holy Mass and heard confessions. Father McCabe was a Priest volunteer for the Federal Bureau of Prison’s Women’s Facility in Aliceville, AL. When he visited he would hear confessions and say Mass at two facilities on the Aliceville Campus. He was in residence at St. Peter Parish in Montgomery; and later retired on July 1, 2012. Fr. “Chuck was a priest for all.” During Covid he would set chairs out on his lawn to hear Confessions. So many came to say thank you at his bedside and to say he was the best at hearing their Confessions. Thank you to everyone that loved and respected him. The family will receive friends at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11 a.m. from the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile.
