

18, 2017 at his home in Mobile. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 58 years,
Willie Etta Quarles Mills, his parents, Charles Wood Mills and Emma Iola Platt Mills, and his
brothers, Richard Mills and C.W. Mills. He is survived by his brother, David Mills of Atlanta, and
his three children, Elizabeth Iola (Harold) Tillman of Foley, William Cordell (Cora) Mills of Mobile,
and Charles Edward (Martha) Mills of Mobile. He was blessed with ten grandchildren,
seventeen great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Mills was born on August 8, 1917, at the Old Kurtz Place in Stateline, Mississippi. After
graduating from Stateline High School, he attended Trevecca Nazarene College for one year. In
1940, he married the love of his life, Willie Etta Quarles from Selma, Alabama. In 1941, he
began working for L&N Railroad as a baggageman, flagman, and brakeman. He was later
promoted to division conductor and retired in 1981.
He was the last surviving charter member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Mobile. The
church was begun in the living room of his father's home. He was saved at the age of 9 and led
an exemplary Christian life for 90 years. He served his church faithfully until he was homebound
and, even then, was faithful to pray for his church and loved ones daily. Never complaining, he
was always thankful for those who continued to visit and reach out with cards and letters. He
was faithful even to the end of his life.
Wake on Sunday January 22, from 5PM-8PM at Radney Funeral Home. Visitation at First
Church of the Nazarene on Monday January 23, 11AM with service by Reverend Glen Messer
at 12PM. Interment afterward at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
