Charles Ronald Potts

Charles Ronald “Chuck” Potts died April 18, 2021 of brain cancer. He was 87. He was a native of Lansing, Michigan, and resident of Mobile since 1960. Chuck was a teacher and administrator in Mobile County Public Schools for 30 years. He taught science at K.J. Clark Middle School, B. C. Rain High School, and Theodore High School. Chuck was assistant principal at Vigor High School and Dunbar Middle School, and principal of Phillips Middle School and Mae Eanes Middle School. He graduated from Plymouth High School in Plymouth, Mich., and had degrees from William Carey College and the University of South Alabama. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and also worked as a chemistry technician testing jet fuel in the Material & Process Control Lab at Brookley Air Force Base in the early 1960s. Chuck was the youngest child of Wesley H. Potts and Mary A. Potts and grew up in Detroit. He came South in 1953 when he was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss. He stayed for the warm weather, the fishing, and the woman who would become his wife, Sharron McGill Potts. Chuck loved his dogs, fishing, hunting, RC airplanes, and tending his yard. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tillman’s Corner where he enjoyed William Jarrell’s Sunday School class and singing in the choir. Previously he was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Leanne Potts and son-in-law Scott Warnke of Atlanta; his son, Andrew Potts of Mobile; Kim Potts of Mobile; grandchildren Courtney Wall (Jason) of Atmore, Ala., Petty Officer Third Class Jason Potts of Oklahoma City, Petty Officer Third Class and IS Intelligence Specialist Cora Potts of Daphne, Ala., Lucinda Warnke of Athens, Ga., and Jack Warnke of Atlanta; great-grandchildren Jordan and Eli Wall of Atmore, Ala.; his dog, Lucy; and a slew of nieces and nephews. Visitation at Pine Crest Funeral Home 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, with the funeral following at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Gideons International or the animal rescue of your choice. Serving as pallbearers are: Ty Howard, Larry Mims, Francis Deer, Ken Fuller, Eddie Callaway and Trey Fore.

Mr. Potts was a beloved teacher at Rain. He was pretty tough on his students but it made us all better people. Funny how when you are in high school you question things that teachers did but once you grow up you look back and are thankful they cared enough to be tough. RIP Mr. Potts.
