Christopher Robert Mahoney died on Wednesday March 21, 2018 at Providence Hospital. He died after a vigorous battle with malignant melanoma at the age of 38. Chris was born on June 2, 1979 in San Diego. He was the son of John Patrick Mahoney and Kathleen Marie Mahoney. He was preceded in death by his grandparents George Raymond and Jane Elizabeth Mahoney and Edward Francis and Sarah Kane McFadden. He is survived by his siblings Laura Mahoney James and her husband Clarence Washington James II, Jessica Phoenix Mahoney, and Kayla Cheyenne Mahoney. Grandmother Judith Marie McFadden, loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
Chris was a native of Mobile attending ER Dickson Elementary and Philips Preparatory School before graduating from Naples American High School in Italy. There he was chosen to be captain of his soccer team and played soccer in Italy, Germany, France, and Belgium.
Chris entered the Marine Corps in January 1998. He was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar before completing the highly competitive Marine Security Guard School. He served as a United States Embassy Guard at embassies in The Hague and Moscow, where he was nicknamed "Wonder Boy". He guarded Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Vice President Dick Cheney. While in the Marines he received the National Defense Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and USMC Rifle Marksman Medal.
After returning to the United States, he attended the University of Alabama where he studied Regional and Urban Development. He was most recently employed by HHS-Hospitality Services as the Director of Food and Nutrition at George Regional Hospital in Lucedale, Mississippi.
Chris also had a love of running, completing two full marathons, five half-marathons and two Spartan races. He ran both at home and abroad.
A wake in memory of Chris will be held Saturday March 24th at 11:00 a.m. with the funeral following at 12:00 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home at 3155 Dauphin St. Mobile, Al. Chris will be laid to rest at Mobile Memorial Gardens after a burial with full military honors.
