Dr. Muller practiced medicine in Mobile, AL for forty-four years as an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, until his retirement in 2007. He had the honor of becoming Mobile's first Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist (otorhinolaryngologist) when he moved to Mobile in 1963 and joined Doctors Lingo, Gilchrist, Dismukes, and Johnson, at the Mobile Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Center, which eventually became Premier Medical Group. Prior to that time, the partners were all trained as Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat specialists. During his years in Mobile, he served the medical community in many ways. Some examples include serving as the President of Mobile County Medical Society; President of Mobile Infirmary Medical Staff; Member of Board of Trustees at Doctor's Hospital; Admissions Board Member for USA Medical School; and a Board Member of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. In 1977, he also served as USA Medical Center Chairman of Dept. of Otolaryngology.
Dr. Muller was born December 18, 1931, in New Orleans, LA, to Charles DeWitt Muller and Inez (Jensen) Muller. After growing up in New Orleans he attended LSU in Baton Rouge, earning his M.D. at LSU School of Medicine in 1956. During his university and medical school years he worked as a cab driver in New Orleans and spent summers as a deck hand on the tugboat Lone Star that plowed the Gulf Coast Intracoastal Waterway.
At LSU Medical School, he developed a thirty-year friendship with his esteemed anatomy professor and mentor, Dr. Charles Mayo Goss MD, who was known as one of Americas foremost anatomists, and who on multiple occasions served as editor for Gray’s Anatomy. Dr. Muller completed his medical residency in Otorhinolaryngology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, where his general surgical training included rotations under the eminent Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, considered by many as the father of modern cardiovascular surgery, who pioneered scores of surgical procedures, and who had a major role in developing the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH). Dr. Muller then served in the US Army as a Medical Doctor in the capacity of Flight Surgeon upon completing his medical training. He was one of a very few Army Captains to have received flight training in Pensacola by the US Navy.
He was a devoted husband and father who placed his family at the center of his free time. He enjoyed sailing and boating with his wife and children at Orange Beach and shared his passion for aviation with anyone who had a stomach for small aircraft. He expressed his artistic talent though photography. He instilled his sense of adventure, love of nature, and sense of humor in his three kids, which they have carried forward into adulthood. He held a special place in his heart for animals, especially for his two dogs, Sunshine and Bonnie.
His survivors include his two daughters, Donna Shepherd and husband, David, of Pensacola, FL; Amy Muller, M.D. of Salida, CO; his son, Hugh Muller, and spouse, Paul Seeley, of Chicago, IL; his grandson John Daniel Martin III, and his wife, Heather, and his two great grandchildren, Adam and Anna Martin, of Alpharetta, GA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jeanon (Richardson) Muller; his brother Charles D. Muller Jr. of Bremerton WA; his sister Lizette Duke of Salem, OR; and his sister Marion Kingsmill of New Orleans, LA.
A private celebration of his life for immediate family was held on Friday, February 9.
