Donald Theodore “Don” Schmitt fell asleep in the Lord after a brief illness on January 15, 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Genevieve “Perry” Schmitt as well as his parents, Theodore and Florine Schmitt. He is survived by three sons: Terry (Laura) of Covington, LA; Alan (Leslie) of Baytown, TX; Eric (Karen) of Fernandina Beach, FL; and one daughter, Debbie Milling (Michael) of Mobile, AL. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Erin Yacur (Chris), Kingsland, GA; Paula Deming (Lawson), North Hollywood, CA; Alan Schmitt, Fernandina Beach, FL; Ryan Beverly, Mobile, AL; Joshua Beverly (Rachel), Huntsville, AL; Marshall Schmitt (Avonlea), Richland, WA; Gabriel Schmitt, Baytown, TX; and two great grandchildren: Katelyn and Landon Yacur.
He was born in Yuma, AZ on September 19, 1927 and moved to Atchison, KS where he completed his grade school years, graduating from Atchison High School. He received a B.A degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO and a B.A. in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. He began his career with Phillips 66 in Bartlesville, OK. He then relocated his family to New Orleans, LA and later League City, TX working for several NASA contractors during the Apollo mission to the Moon. He then relocated to Mobile, AL to work for Stauffer Chemical, finally retiring from Mobile Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Center. After moving with his wife Perry to Sylva, NC to enjoy retirement in the Smoky Mountains, they returned to Mobile in 2017 to be close to their daughter Debbie.
A memorial service for Don will be held Friday, February 8, 2019 at 6 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Mobile, AL.
He was always very involved with his Lutheran Church family, most recently as a member of Grace Lutheran Church on Government Street in Mobile. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “New Building Fund” at Grace Lutheran Church, 1356 Government Street, Mobile, AL 36604.
