Doris Slay Hays, 83, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2021 in Mobile, Alabama. Doris was born to Daniel and Lora Slay in Meridian, Mississippi on January 5, 1938. She graduated from the Providence Hospital School of Nursing as an LPN, and she worked at Mobile Infirmary for a few years while her children were little. Doris was a minister of the Gospel. She was the founder of Women’s Aglow International Fellowship in the state of Alabama. She taught children’s church, was a youth minister, and was the women’s ministries director. Doris also sang and played the piano. She was an artist and enjoyed painting and interior design. Doris was also a wonderful cook – having been taught by her father who was a chef. She was a Godly woman, and had a truly altruistic heart. Doris never wanted credit for her good deeds, so she would just do what needed to be done for people and never let on to the fact that she was the one doing. She gave clothes, food, shelter, money – anything she had to make sure someone didn’t do without. Above all else, Doris was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, and will be greatly missed.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and son, Hiram Bernard Hays, Jr.
She is survived by her adoring husband of 67 years, Hiram B. Hays, Sr.; three daughters, Diana Hays, Andrea McLean, and Stephanie Gamel (Dan); one son, Hiram B. Hays III; two granddaughters, Kaitlin Chapman (Gamaliel), Jamie McLean; and one great-grandson, Hudson Chapman.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home, with a graveside service in Pine Crest Cemetery immediately following.
