Born on August 4, 1929, in Brewton, Alabama, Doris was the daughter of Norman Leon Thornton and Lillian Margaret (Jackson) Thornton. She was married to the love of her life, William Marvin Raley Sr., for 71 devoted years, building a life centered around faith, family, laughter, and unconditional love.
A true matriarch in every sense of the word, Doris was the foundation and glue of her family. Her home was the heart of countless holidays, celebrations, fish fries, crab boils, and
afternoons spent rocking on the porch surrounded by generations of loved ones and friends. There was never a hungry mouth at Memaw’s house — if she loved you, you were getting fed
whether you liked it or not.
Doris never stopped raising children. From her own children to grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she helped shape and nurture generations with fierce love, wisdom, humor, and strength. She loved deeply, laughed loudly, and never hesitated to set someone straight when needed. Her famous saying, “Bless your heart,” could mean many things depending on the situation — and everyone knew exactly what she meant. She found joy in life’s simple treasures: gardening flowers and crops, dancing with Pawpaw, caring for her pet Booboo, and cooking meals that brought everyone together. Every Christmas, family members eagerly gathered for her giant pot of homemade gumbo, hugs
included. There was never a better porch to pass the time on than the one at Memaw’s. Doris was of Baptist faith and proudly shared that, “I read the Bible all the way through,” inspiring many others to do the same. Doris was a member of the Eastern Star and blessed countless lives through her kindness, strength, humor, and unwavering love for her family and community. To know Memaw was to be loved, fed, fussed at when necessary, and welcomed like family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Marvin Raley Sr.; daughter, Margaret Cecile Hubbard; sons, William Marvin Raley Jr. (Lisa) and Jimpsey Terry Raley; grandsons, Joseph Alexander Riordan, Terry Douglas Raley III, and Ronald “Rocky” McMenamy; great-grandson, Anthony Rome Pierce; grandson-in-law, Danny Lee Roberts Jr.
She is survived by her son, Darrell Lee Raley; daughter, Joann Riordan, whose selfless love and faithful care allowed Memaw to spend her final days where she was happiest — at the
home she loved and cherished; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; nineteen great-great-grandchildren; her beloved dog, BooBoo; and many dear friends and loved ones who were considered family.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 29, 2026, at Pine Crest Funeral Home, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, Alabama 36605.
Family visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. Friends and loved ones are welcome to visit from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Art Burroughs officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service.
Pallbearers will be Cullie Riordan, Corey Raley, Marcus Raley, Hunter Sellers, and Robert Nerkowski.
Following the burial, family and friends are welcome to return to Memaw’s home, where generations gathered for so many years, to share food, stories, laughter, and memories in her honor.
Arrangements are being handled by Pine Crest Funeral Home and Cemetery.
