Dorothy Ann "Jean" Young - passed into eternal rest on February 27, 2023. A devoted Catholic, Jean was born in Mobile on May 24, 1941, to Alva and Earline Young (both deceased). She also was preceded in death by her brother, Dennis E. Young; sister-in-law, Marion Marie Young; niece Denise Young; and nephew, Dennis Shane Young. She is survived by her brother, David A. Young (Carolyn) of Columbus, Georgia; nephew, David Michael Young (Wendy); and niece, Sharon VanderWal (Rick). She was a graduate of Bishop Toolen High School and a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, and later, of Corpus Christi Parish where she taught eighth grade.
After leaving education , Jean worked in the fund raising industry for The Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Ronald mcDonald house, and The Alzheimer's Foundation, where she made dozens of friends in the name of compassion and philanthropy. Unfortunately, poor health and injury forced her into retirement, and, in her last years, she was cared for by four special friends from Toolen High: Margaret Lockler, Ann Mackey, Diane O'Hara, and Mary Claire Harrington. Each of them provided hundreds of hours of friendship and prayers, anchored in spiritual faith. Her neighbor, Suzanne Lelwica, proved to be irreplaceable, as she expended uncountable hours of visitation, errand running, and emotional support, both at home and in Jean's last months in Crowne of Mobile nursing home. Suzanne also showed exceptional patience, keeping the family informed of Jean's trials, as well as providing advice on how to care for Jean's home and yard.
Jean especially wanted to thank her favorite home caretaker, Shirley Kidd, for her compassion, prayers and attention to a myriad of personal matters for more than two years. Their bond of friendship was based not only on professional matters, but also on personal respect and love, one for the other. Ashley Moore, another of Jean's caretakers, also had a bond of understanding during some very difficult times.
A sincere heartfelt note of love and appreciation goes to Mrs. Laverne Davis, Jean's roommate in the last two years of life. Daily, Laverne lifted Jean's spirits with a wonderful sense of friendship and small acts of every-day compassion, for which we are eternally grateful.
No doubt there are others to whom Jean owed a sincere "Thank You!", and they can be assured that she will watch over them in heaven. She rests in peace.
