Doug was born in Mobile on February 24, 1957, to parents, Douglas Lucian Modling and Ruth Weston Modling. He graduated in 1975 from St. Paul’s High School in Mobile where he met many of his lifelong friends. From there, Doug attended The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and then went on to medical school at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. During a surgical residency at the USA Medical Center, Doug met Denise Calderaro and sparks flew. They moved to Shreveport where Doug completed his internship and residency in surgery and urology at LSU Medical Center. Doug and Denise married in 1989, had their daughter Olivia in 1991 and son Douglas III in 1992. Then the family of four moved to Birmingham, Alabama, so Doug could begin his practice at Urology Centers of Alabama, where he was devoted to his many patients for almost 20 years.
After a successful career as a surgeon, Doug retired to his hometown of Mobile where he enjoyed spending time with family and his many loyal friends. He filled his time traveling the world, attending bucket list concerts (Oldchella!), and sailing his boat with his son, Douglas in Mobile Bay.
Doug was an amazing man. He was kind, quiet, and observant, with a dry sense of humor, incredible intellect and a passionate love of music. He was a DIE HARD Crimson Tide fan and, against all odds, became a big fan of Pitbull in the later years of his life. Doug will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Calderaro Modling; sister, Pamela Modling Baker (John E Baker, Jr.); children, Olivia Modling Forte (Will Forte) and Douglas Lucian Modling III; granddaughters, Zoe Douglas Forte and Cecelia Rose Forte; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws and friends who meant the world to him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 1, 2023, 1pm at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, Alabama. If inclined, in lieu of flowers, please donate to Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
