A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 30th at All Saints Episcopal Church, 151 S Ann St, Mobile, AL 36604. Visitation from 2:00 PM to 2:50 PM will precede the service. A reception will follow the service in Stirling Hall. In lieu of flowers, send memorials to the ABBA Shrine Transportation Fund, All Saints Episcopal Music Fund, or your chosen charity.
Edgar was born on November 5th, 1937 in Danville, Illinois to James A. and Beulah Rae Hughes. He was always remembered as an Eagle Scout and for his singing ability, as he inherited it from the long line of “singing Hughes’s” from Wales. He graduated from Gulfport High School in 1955, and later from the Univ. of Southern Miss. with B.S. and M.S degrees. His career began as a junior college professor in Senatobia, MS, then Bay Minette, AL. From there he moved to Marine Biology at the State Marine Resources Lab on Dauphin Island, AL where he performed shellfish and fisheries wildlife conservation and preservation improvement studies. His career culminated at the Mobile County Health Department, where he began as an Environmental Health Spec. and retired as the Dir. of Vector (Mosquito) Control.
Edgar is survived by his wife, Gwen, of Mobile and children: Edgar Allen Hughes, Jr. of Burleson, TX (Rochelle); Taylor Kahn Hughes of Alexandria, VA (Janice); Dee Ann Doan Westover of Fort Walton Beach, FL (Dan); and Steven Scot Doan of Niceville, FL (Rachael); four grandchildren: Courtney McNally, Lauren Westover, Megan Doan, and Ashley Doan; his sisters, Italy June Spratt (Steve) and Susan Elizabeth (Betsy) Yraguen (Jaime) of Roseburg, OR; and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother J. Archie Hughes, Jr.
