Edward Hunt McGaughy, 53, passed away early on the evening of Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Mobile, Alabama. He was born August 7, 1964 to Leroy and Suzanne Duvall McGaughy in Mobile. On December 15, 1984, Ed married Cathy Donaldson in Mobile, Alabama. The two were happily married for over thirty-three years. Simple words on a sheet cannot begin to describe the imprint that Ed McGaughy left on this world. A birth date and a death date, set far too close together, were the bookends of a beautiful, God-filled life. Words such as kind, loving, and gracious come to mind- but they feel insufficient. Our minds are flooded with memories of over-sized hugs and a big-booming voice, but still, these memories are only a glimpse into what was a truly fantastic life. In the most genuine way, Ed spent each and every day of life as a living, breathing invitation into the love of Christ. The spirit flowed out of Ed with such boldness and unrelenting strength- it seemed impossible to love and honor Ed without also loving and honoring God. With Christ leading his life, he loved his wife in a way that made an ugly world appear beautiful. Anyone who witnessed the love between Ed and Cathy witnessed something lovely, pure, and strong. He loved Cathy through great trials, and she cared for him until his very last day. The two raised four Christian men who remember him as funny, challenging, courageous, and at times, a bit stubborn. Love in the McGaughy family was tested and tried, but time after time, it grew. It grew bigger, louder, and impossible to contain. With this love, they led friends, family, and hundreds of teens into a God-filled life. Ed may have departed from the world we know, but with joy in our hearts, we can say that we will be reunited with him again. Ed is survived by his loving wife, Cathy; four sons, Aaron, Caleb, Ethan, and Seth McGaughy; three daughters-in-law, Katy, Maggie, and Morgan McGaughy; his parents, Leroy and Suzanne McGaughy; his brother, David McGaughy; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 28, 2018 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. The funeral will be held Monday, January 29 at 2:00 p.m. Both will be held at the Creekwood Church of Christ in Mobile. Immediately following will be an interment at the Pine Crest Cemetery on Dauphin Island Parkway. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Bright Beginnings Academy in Mobile, Alabama or Mobile Christian School Building Fund.
