Elizabeth (Betty) Young Meier, age 80, a longtime resident of Mobile, passed away on Friday, August 10th just a few days before her 81st birthday. She was born on August 18th, 1937 in Pensacola, FL. She was preceded in death by her mother Rosie Lee Young and her father Levi Collins Young.
Betty moved to Mobile from Pensacola when she was 5 years old. She attended the Kate Shepard Grammar School and Murphy High School. Her father, an officer in the US Air Force, was stationed in England during the Korean War, where Betty attended Burtonwood High School. During that time she had the opportunity to visit many counties in Europe. In 1955 her father was reassigned to Truax Field AFB in Madison, WI where she graduated from Madison East High School. After graduating, she went to work as the administrative assistant to the head of the University of Wisconsin English Dept. She met Don at a popular college student hang-out called the Kollege Klub, that was owned by Don and his brothers Jim & John. It was St. Patrick’s Day of 1956, a very busy day at the KK, when the fire marshal was stationed at the front door “counting heads”. The brother’s friends knew they could by-pass the fire marshal by entering thru the back door in the alley. In order to monitor who snuck in the alley door that day, Don was standing guard when Betty came in with some friends and that is when the romance started. Soon after that they were engaged and moved to Mobile when Betty’s dad retired from the Air Force. They were married at Dauphin Way Baptist Church on March 30th, 1957. Betty worked for Radcliff Industries until 1959 when Don, who worked for Morrison’s Cafeterias, was transferred to New Orleans. From there they moved, as Don climbed the ranks at Morrison’s, to several cities in the southeast and as far west as Dallas, TX, ultimately coming back to Mobile when Don retired in 1989. While living in Dallas and Houston, Betty worked for several large corporations such as Exxon, Ling-Temco-Vought, Harris Corporation & Texas Commerce Bank as an administrative assistant. While living in Slidell, LA, she worked as a residential real estate agent until moving back to Mobile. After Don retired they spent time at their beach condo in Perdido Key, a place that Betty truly loved, where they made friends from all over the country and hosted friends and family making memories on the beach.
She is survived by her husband, Don Meier, of 61 years, her children Cindy Oubre (Ray) of Patterson, LA and Steve Meier of Dallas, TX. She also leaves to cherish her memory five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 18th 2018 at 2:00 at Radney Funeral Home at 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL 36606. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Abba Shriner organization of Mobile where Betty’s father was a longstanding member and Potentate.
