

Ethel Giroir Carter – departed this life on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. She passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 84. Ethel was born in New Orleans, LA and moved to Mobile after getting married. Mrs. Carter had a 46 year real estate career; 43 with Roberts Brothers serving as the Executive Vice-President of Residential Sales, and 3 years afterwards with Exit Realty Lyon as Training & Recruiting Director. She also taught courses for the National Association of REALTORS®, earned the CRB designation, and received REALTOR® Emeritus status from Mobile Area Association of REALTORS® (MAAR) for being a member 40 years or more. In 1969, Ethel Carter formed and chartered Women’s Council of REALTORS® (WCR) in Mobile, AL - a network of successful REALTORS® empowering women to exercise their potential as entrepreneurs and industry leaders. WCR honors one recipient each year with an award named after her, the “Ethel Carter Award”. In 1973, Ethel was elected the 1st female President of the board of REALTORS® for Mobile County leading the way for women in real estate leadership earning the name ‘Madam President”. In 1996, she was selected as the prestigious “First Lady of Mobile”, given each year by the local chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, a service, cultural and social sorority. She also received the Omega Tau Rho award which is given in recognition of past contributions of REALTORS® to the National Association of REALTORS® and its affiliated institutes, societies and councils. She was active with Junior Achievement, served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and chaired Community Concerts their initial year helping bring the original “Grease” play to Mobile. Mrs. Carter was known throughout the real estate communities in both Mobile and Baldwin Counties and was highly respected among her peers and commonly referred to as “Mother Superior”. Ethel was a devoted Catholic and attended Our Savior Church. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Eugene Carter, her grandson, Master Kristofer Robert Coggin, and her only brother, Philip Giroir. She is survived by her children, Laurence Robert Carter (Cindie), Susan Carter Lyon (James), Catherine Ann Coggin (David), and Julie Carter Hamby, her grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Coggin, Robert Thomas Hamby, Erin Elizabeth Hamby, Byron Eugene Carter, her cousin, Mike McGill (Christine), and cousin, Catherine Favre, as well as many loving devoted friends. The family would like to send a special thank you to Laura Grandquest and Corene Simmons for their loving attention and care during the last months of her life. The family will receive friends at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street on Friday, March 8, from 5 to 8pm with the funeral service being held on Saturday, March 9th at 12:00 noon.
