Born on October 17, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Evelyn was the beloved daughter of Anna and Joseph Wittmann. She later moved with her family to the countryside of Lebanon, Ohio, where she developed a lifelong love of nature, gardening, and the beauty of simple living.
Education was both Evelyn's passion and her calling. She earned her bachelor's degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and later received her master's degree in education from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She dedicated many years to teaching at Edward Livingston Middle School in New Orleans, where she inspired generations of students with her patience, kindness, and love of learning. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, and she remained proud of the lives she helped shape throughout her career.
Evelyn embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing tennis and remained active throughout her life. She was an accomplished bridge player who spent countless happy hours at the Bridge Center in New Orleans, forming treasured friendships around the card table. She loved tending her garden, challenging family and friends to games of Scrabble, attending festivals and concerts, and listening to jazz. Whether she was surrounded by flowers in her garden or music with friends, Evelyn found joy in the simple pleasures of life.
During the last four years of her life, Evelyn made her home in Mobile, Alabama, where she lived near and with her family. Being close to her grandchildren and great-grandson brought her immeasurable happiness, and she treasured every moment spent watching them grow and sharing in their lives.
Evelyn was also deeply grateful for the friendships she found through the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program. The compassionate staff and her fellow patients became an extended family, offering encouragement, companionship, and laughter that enriched her life. Their kindness meant more to her than words could express.
Above all, Evelyn was devoted to her family. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Barbara Gibbs, and son-in-law, Davy Gibbs; her granddaughters, Katlyn Stevens and her husband, Nick, Madelyn Stewart and her husband, Cole, and Jacquelyn Gibbs; and her cherished great-grandson, Boyd Stevens. She is also survived by her brother, Walter Wittmann, and her cousin, John Keck. She was preceded in death by her beloved cousin, Barbara Keck, and her loving Tante Bertha and Onkel Eugene.
In accordance with Evelyn's wishes, no public services will be held. She will be laid to rest beside her parents in Ohio.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, love, and support during this difficult time. They also wish to express their sincere appreciation to the staff and fellow participants of the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program for the exceptional care, friendship, and compassion they shared with Evelyn.
Though she will be deeply missed, Evelyn's family finds comfort in knowing she lived a life rich in love, learning, friendship, and joy. Her memory will forever be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
