

The Reverend Monsignor Francis C. Murphy, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Mobile residing at the Sacred Heart Residence of Little Sisters of the Poor, died on Monday, October 2, 2017. Monsignor Murphy was born on November 17, 1920 in Curragh, County Kildare, Ireland. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Cork before entering St. Patrick’s College Seminary in Carlow. He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on June 2, 1946 in Ireland under sponsorship of the Diocese of Mobile. After ordination and arrival in the United States, Monsignor Murphy first served as an Assistant Pastor at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Mobile. He became Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Prichard in 1954. He went on to serve as Pastor to Christ the King Parish, Daphne; St. Maurice Parish, Brewton; St. Margaret Parish, Bayou La Batre; Little Flower Parish, Mobile; St. Monica Parish, Mobile; and became Pastor of St. Dominic Parish, Mobile in 1983. He was named a Prelate to His Holiness on July 19, 1988 which grants the title of Monsignor. Monsignor Murphy retired as Pastor of St. Dominic Parish in June 1996 but remained in residence and ministry at the parish for nineteen additional years until he moved to the Sacred Heart Residence of the Little Sisters of the Poor in June 2015 due to his advanced age and health concerns.
Visitation and Funeral services for Monsignor Murphy will take place at St. Dominic Parish, 4156 Burma Road, Mobile, AL 36693. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. with Office of the Dead for a Deceased Priest at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 5, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. with interment in the Priests’ Section of Catholic Cemetery.
