Frank R. “Shorty” Marcus - It is with heavy heart our family announces the passing of yet another WWII Navy Veteran. Mr. Marcus proudly served his country in the Atlantic aboard the D.E. USS Decker. Many wonderful stories of his tour in the Navy have been and will be passed down from generation to generation.
Mr. Marcus was also a 38 year retiree of BellSouth where he started out as an electrician and retired as a PBXIR, which is to say he installed very advanced equipment for the time and we now view as antique.
He was also a member of the Pioneers of America and a very proud member of Christ United Methodist Church.
Mr. Marcus passed away in a peaceful sleep on Friday Dec. 28th at the age of 90 while at home with his beloved bride of 66 years by his side. He fought a very hard and brave battle against pancreatic cancer.
Our Daddy would often say ‘dying was like going toward the horizon on a ship—it would not be long before he was reunited with loved ones that had gone on before him.’
Amanda Mechelle Jones, a loving granddaughter which predeceased him on 10-27-10, was waiting with parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and a whole host of family and friends ready to welcome him through Heavens Gates and into our Lord’s loving arms.
He is survived by his bride, Sophia R. Marcus; daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” M. Jones (Oscar S. Jones, III); two sons, William R. “Randy” Marcus (Penny Rollins) and Wayne Alan Marcus; three grandchildren, Amy M. Marcus, Ashley M. Crittenden and Devin A. Marcus; three brothers, Patrick Marcus (Vivian), Donald Marcus (Ruth), Jack Marcus (Rena); and a sister, Mary Williams. He also is survived by four beloved great- grandchildren.
We wish to thank Mobile Infirmary Hospice, and a special thanks to his nurses Ms. Deborah and Ms. LaTisha, and caregiver, Misty Wiggins.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Friday, January 4, 2012, at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, January 3, from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Marcus had requested in lieu of flowers please direct memorials to the American Cancer Society or Christ United Methodist Church.
Condolences may be offered at www.mmgfuneralhome.com. Arrangements by Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 6040 Three Notch Road, Mobile, Alabama 36619.
