

Gerard Thomas Neely, Sr., who went by Jerry, passed away in his home surrounded by family at age 87 on October 03, 2024. He was born on July 23, 1937 to Gerard Joseph Neely and Una (Thomas) Neely. He married his high school sweetheart, Sue (Pennington) Neely, who describes him as the perfect husband. Together they enjoyed 66 years of marriage. He retired as a Captain of the United States Marine Corps, and subsequently worked for and retired from the Little Sisters of the Poor in Mobile, AL. Jerry was very detail-oriented and punctual. He had exceptional penmanship and volunteered to write recommendations for military honors and notifications to families of the injured and deceased while serving in Vietnam. He was a parishioner of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, where he was also married. He doted upon his wife, children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Sue Neely, his daughters, Vicki Houk, Amanda Herring and Blakely Herring and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Gerard Neely, Jr. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 A.M., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial from 11:00-12:00 P.M.; both events will be held at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Mobile, AL on Tuesday October 08, 2024. His remains will be interred into the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, AL on a later date.
