

G.L. was a 1950 graduate of Baker High School where he was an outstanding athlete excelling in football and basketball. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and retired from Northwest Airlines after 40 years of service. He coached Little League Baseball and women’s softball teams for many years. He was active in the sports program at Bates Field Ball Park and a supporter of Baker High School Football and Baseball. G.L.’s hobby was working on old Gravely Tractors. He loved working in his yard and garden and was often told he could plant a stick and it would grow. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Toulmin Lodge #875 F&AM, Tanner Williams Historical Society, where he served as President for many years and worked tirelessly to restore the old Tanner Williams School. Thank you to St. Joseph Hospice and their staff for the care and compassion shown to G.L. and our family during his illness. To Drs. Angel, Arnold, H. Long and Kumar, “Thank you”. He put up a good fight but God knew his time had come.
G.L. never met a stranger and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gregory L. Sr., and Katie Gollotte Pierce, one sister Elosie Pierce Young.
G. L. is survived by his wife of 63 years Carol Byrd Pierce. Daughters Peggy C. Pierce & Judith A Pierce of Mobile, AL., son Gregory L Pierce III, daughter in law Laurie Bohannon Pierce, grandson Gregory L Pierce IV, Sharpsburg, GA., granddaughter Heather R. Pierce, West Palm Beach, FL., siblings Ida M Pierce and Clarence (Barbara) Pierce. Nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 2, 2017 5:00 p.m. till 8 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin Street. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 3, 2017, at Trinity Baptist Church, 13685 Tanner Williams Road at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior. Chaplain Bob Barr of ST Joseph Hospice and Reverend Vaughan Gardner of Trinity Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens, 626 Pierce Road.
