Harvey Duncan Nowling, Jr. passed away at his home September 1, 2014. A native Mobilian, he was born May 14, 1925, the son of Harvey Duncan Nowling and Annie Bristow Nowling. Like many of his generation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp just a few weeks after Pearl Harbor, at the age of 16. As a radio operator he made many landings in the Pacific Islands including Guadalcanal. He left the service with the rank of Sergeant. Following his service, he attended Auburn University before taking a position at Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company. He retired after many years of service. Harvey was a Ham Radio enthusiast (call sign K4KDU) and avid electronics tinkerer. He home built the computer used to balance loads at the ADDSCO dry-docks. If you asked him what he wanted to eat, his first choice was always a Dew Drop Hot Dog. Affectionately called Pops, he was devoted to his daughter and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Gladys Prine Nowling, sister Agnes Nowling Hodnette and brother Thomas Hillary Nowling. He is survived by his sister Winnie Nowling Edwards, his daughter Linda Nowling Hudson (Milton) and two grandchildren Matthew Collins Hudson, Riley Katherine Hudson and other nieces and nephews. Celia Rivers took care of Mr. Harvey and he asked every morning when he woke up if she would be there that day. The family thanks her for her kindness and care. In lieu of flowers the family asks that remembrances be made to the American Heart Association. Graveside services will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery on Friday, September 5 at 10:00 a.m.Condolences may be offered at www.radneyfuneralhome-mobile.com. Arrangements under the direction of Radney Funeral Home-Mobile, Mobile, AL.
