Hertha C. Formby – a 97 year-old native of Covington County, MS and a resident of Mobile for over 65 years went home to be with the risen Lord on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012. She was a teacher in the public schools of Mississippi, Texas, and Mobile County, AL for more than 50 years. After retirement, she was instrumental in establishing the day care and pre-school at Spring Hill Avenue Baptist, teaching there for a number of years. She also tutored students privately during this period. Mrs. Formby’s love of teaching reading to young children is remembered by generations of her former students. She was a faithful member of Spring Hill Avenue Baptist Church. Although ill health prevented her regular attendance in recent years, Mrs. Formby and her family fondly remember the celebration of her 95th birthday with her church family in September, 2010. Mrs. Formby was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Formby, Sr.; oldest son, James O. Formby, Jr.; and her sister, Mary Lou Pry. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Wilma Tyler (John); son, Lloyd Formby; brother, Jerry David Catchings of Land O’ Lakes, FL; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Thursday, April 12, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. until the 10 a.m. chapel service, with Bro. Don Bond officiating.
