He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Alexander; two sons, James R. (Cammie) Alexander, III and Steven C. (Keiko) Alexander; three grandchildren, Caitlyn, Rusty and Kyler Alexander; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mr. Alexander attended St. Mary School, McGill Institute and Spring Hill College. He served three years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired after 32 years from the Mobile Housing Board where he served as Executive Director. Mr. Alexander was past president of Mobile Area Community Action for four years, past president of Alabama Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, founding member of National Council of Large Public Housing Authorities, and a founding member of National Board of Directors to the Public Housing Directors. He served on the Allen Memorial Home Board of Directors and Catholic Social Justice Commission during Bishop May's Episcopate. Mr. Alexander received the M.O. Beale Scroll of Merit in December, 1984, in recognition of his years of service to the community. He was admitted to the Alabama Hall of Fame in October, 1993, for outstanding accomplishment, service and contribution to the lives of older American citizens. He served on the local Navy Service Action Task Force and on the local boards of the United Way, S. D. Bishop College, Senior Citizens Services, and Little Flower and St. Joseph Parish Councils. He was a previous member of Skyline Country Club, now Heron Lakes Country Club.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Joseph Catholic Church, 808 Springhill Ave., Mobile, 36602, on Thursday, December 9, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
