James Grimsley Beck, Jr., "Jay," passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the age of 55. Jay was a loving father, husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend whose love for his family shaped his life. Nothing brought him greater pride than his son, Jaybo, who was truly the center of his world. From T-ball through high school graduation, Jay spent countless hours coaching, encouraging, and supporting not only his own son but many young athletes along the way. Jay was passionate about football, especially Alabama football and UMS-Wright. He loved remaining connected to the game and his alma matter through his volunteer work with UMS-Wright athletics and was loved Friday nights when was serving on the chain gang for the Bulldogs. He was also an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. Jay was known for his quick sense of humor, his generous heart, and his unwavering loyalty. As one lifelong friend said, "He was loyal, to a fault." He was the kind of friend who showed up when he was needed and never forgot the people he loved. In recent months, Jay had entered a new and hopeful chapter in his life. He had begun a challenging new position with Esfeller Construction and was glad to be part of his work family. He was looking forward to the future with optimism and purpose. Those closest to him often described him as "a changed man." Though his life was cut far too short, those who knew and loved Jay take comfort in knowing he was at peace with God and working each day to become the best version of himself. Jay will be remembered for his love of family, his loyalty to friends, his commitment to helping others, and the laughter he brought into every room. He is survived by his wife, Laura Webb Beck and his son, James Grimsley Beck III, his sisters, Saylor Beck Wiley (James Conrad Wiley) Elizabeth Beck Roney (Walter Eugene Roney III) and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him. A memorial service celebrating Jay's life will be held at Ashland Place United Methodist Church on Thursday, June 18th with visitation at 10:00 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00.
