James Walter Gill

Mr. James Walter “Jimmy” Gill, longtime resident of Mobile, AL, passed away at home on Thursday, November 26, 2020 at the age of 86. Mr. Gill is preceded in death by parents, Earl Coale and Ethel Bridges Gill, wife, June Miller Gill, brothers, Bobby Ray Gill and Robert Earl “Pete” Gill and nephew, Byron Joseph Oliver.

Mr. Gill served his country honorably in the United States Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict and loved to tell how he got a 4 year cruise around the world for free. He was a gunner's mate 3rd Class aboard Destroyer, USS Remey and later obtained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Alabama Defense Forces. He was a Lieutenant with 28 years of service with the Mobile Police Department. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Award in March 1977 after being shot while on duty.

Jimmy had a love for reading, history, traveling, camping, hunting, extended family and friends, his pets, building models, collecting coins, vintage model cars and telling stories.

Mr. Gill is survived by his children; James Ronald Gill, Deborah June Sizemore (Damian Rosario), Larry Walter Gill and Charles Michael Gill. He is also survived by his sisters; Jean Gill (Liz), Jeannette Oliver (Dare), grandchildren; Kathleen Woodard (Randy), James Scrivner, Allison Sanderson, Haley Barial (Jason), Tyler Gill (Shaina), Sean Gill, Ryan Gill, great-grandchildren; Brock, Layla, Carson Woodard, Payton, Aubrey Barial, Ava McCreary, Kade Sanderson, Adaleigh Gill, nieces and nephews; Christina McMurray (Robin), Justin Oliver, great-nieces and nephews; Regan, Keith and MaKenzie McMurray, and his endearing special friends, Ron and Betty Mair, Tom and Trisha Jennings and Brittany Lee.

The family would also like to express their appreciation for their dad’s dedicated and loving sitters; Penny-who daddy said could join the family because he loved her so much, Vivaria, Octavia, Carmisha-who gently helped him to pass into the next life, Ashley and Marianna.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 2, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military honors.
