
Dr. James L. Harding – died on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at a local hospital. Dr. Harding, son of the late Ida M. Harding and Col. Herbert P. Harding, and twin brother of the late John W. Harding, was born in Harvey, IL on August 4, 1929. A graduate of University Military School in Mobile, he served his country in the U.S. Army and went on to earn his PhD in Geological Oceanography from Texas A&M University. Dr. Harding served as a professor for many years, making many contributions to his field of study and retired from the University of Georgia a Professor Emeritus. He also worked for the U.N. as a consultant in Asia. During his retirement, he served as an officer, lecturer, and member of the University of South Alabama’s Odyssey Program and a member of the Providence Hospital Auxiliary Services. Survivors include his wife, Meredith Jane Reese Harding; niece, Sarah Turner (Russ); nephews, Gregory Harding (Gabriela) and James L. Harding II; four great-nephews; sister-in-law, Marianna Hyndman; numerous nephews and nieces-in-law and devoted friends. Special friends include Thomas Angel of Houma, LA, Dr. John Knoakes of Athens, GA, and his “buddy,” Ralph Reese. A memorial service will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street on Saturday, September 25, 2010, at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.
