

McDavid Hirs. He graduated from University Military School in 1952 and then on to the
University of Alabama, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and
graduated in 1956 with a Bachelors of Science in Commerce.
He was commissioned as 2nd Lt in the United States Army Reserve. After returning to Mobile,
Jimmy reigned as King Felix III in 1958. In 1960, Jimmy married the former Mary Lucy McKnight
of Mobile, and they had three daughters.
Jimmy attended courses in Bank Management at Columbia University, Harvard University, and
The University of Oklahoma School of Commercial Lending. He worked in fields of insurance,
real estate, finance, and served as President of American National Bank, and retired in 1993 as
Executive Vice President and City President of Mobile AmSouth Bank Corporation.
Jimmy proudly served and loved his community. He was instrumental in the founding and
development of St. Paul’s Episcopal School, where he served twice as the Chairman of the
School Board, and as President of St Paul’s Episcopal School Foundation. Jimmy was Senior
Warden at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, President of Alabama School of Math and Science
Board, Director and Treasurer of Mobile Opera Guild, and Director of The Finance Committee of
Providence Hospital.
Jimmy enjoyed deep sea fishing on his appropriately named boat, “Overdraught”. His passion
was to be in the spring woods hunting the wild turkey. Nothing gave him more pleasure than to
be at his beach, to travel the world, and to enjoy being with his grandchildren and his friends.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Edward Adolph Hirs, Jr. and his wife,
Mary Lucy. He is survived by his three daughters, Jamie Hirs Crow (Joe), Lucy Hirs Hines, Leigh
Hirs Carrington (Clay), and his grandchildren, Bailey Crow, Katie McNeil (Robert), Jamie Conger
(Jack), Louise DeSoto (Jesse), Kelley Hines, Clay Carrington, Jr. (Morgan), Bradley Russell
(Josh), Meme Carrington, and his six great grandchildren. Jimmy was also survived by his long
time companion, Mary Eugenia Phifer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 4051 Old Shell Road,
Mobile, Alabama, 36608, and St Paul’s Episcopal School, 161 Dogwood Lane, Mobile, Alabama,
36608.
Services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, February 15th, 2024, with
Visitation at Noon and Memorial service being held at 1pm.
