James “Jim” Ronald Ubelhor Jr., 68, passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024. Jim was born on October 11, 1956, in Evansville, Indiana, to James Ronald Ubelhor Sr. and Mary Anne Carroll. He was the eldest of six children. His father’s military career took the family across the United States, with much of his youth spent in El Paso, Texas, as well as Deming and Albuquerque, New Mexico. As a Boy Scout, he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors. A nomadic spirit at heart, Jim enjoyed hitchhiking as a teenager along the West Coast, exploring states such as California and Colorado.
In 1974, Jim joined the Army, serving during the Vietnam War. He later spent many years in San Diego, California, where he started and raised his family. In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, he moved to the Gulf Coast to assist with rebuilding efforts. His expertise in heavy machinery took him to many remarkable places, including Hawaii, where he helped construct Kings’ Course, a golf course in Waikoloa.
A passionate golfer, Jim found solace and camaraderie on the greens of Bayou Vista Golf Course in Gulfport, Mississippi. He spent his final years in Gulfport, drawn to the Gulf Coast for its beaches, food, and vibrant entertainment.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Kristen and Alana; his grandson, Sean James; his siblings, Jeffrey (and Nicole), Jon (and Tara), Jerry, Joseph, and Joybeth (and Allen) Fissette; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family gives their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Veterans Association and University Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Mitchell Cancer Institute (https://www.usahealthsystem.com/give), which provided exceptional care for Jim. A burial service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the Biloxi National Cemetery.
