Mr. Smith served for many years in the United States Coast Guard retiring at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. During his service, he served in Vietnam and was the commanding officer of two ships and one shore unit earning various medals and citations. After retirement, he became a CAD operator for CSA for 20 years. Mr. Smith was also a founding member of the Seven Hill Volunteer Fire Department for which he served for 42 years and was its Chief. He was a member of the American Legion and CWO Association. Mr. Smith enjoyed NASCAR, Alabama football, and softball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Smith and June Louis Hudson Smith; son, Jay Austin “Snuffy” Smith, Jr.; and sister, Irene Barbara Menard.
Mr. Smith is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Ann Smith; daughter, Amanda Smith; siblings, Shirley Hubert, Timothy Smith (Ann), and Kathy Opezio (Mike); nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the service hour.
