

The Honorable Jerry R. Shirey, Councilman (City of Semmes), passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017. He is preceded in death by his parents, Merida R. and Myrtie B. Underwood Shirey, sisters, Infant and Evelyn Faye Banks, brother, Hubert Hilton Shirey and son-in-law, Joel Lance LaPorte. Mr. Shirey served his country honorably in the United States Army as a Chaplin’s Assistant. He graduated with highest honors from the University of Montevallo with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi (Nation Honor Society in Education) and a member of Phi Alpha Theta (National Honor Society in History). He graduated from the University of Alabama with a Master’s Degree in Psychology, lacking only one quarter from receiving his Doctorate. Councilman Shirey retired after 22 years of service as a Counseling Psychologist with the Department of Veterans Affairs. After retiring from the VA, he worked with Bishop State Community College as a VA Certifying Official retiring after over 15 years. Mr. Shirey was a founding father of the City of Semmes and served as City Councilman since its beginning. He was also chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee. Mr. Shirey is survived by his wife, Lynda D. Shirey, children; Matthew D. (Raegan) Shirey, Christopher S. Shirey, Vickie L. Shirey, sister, Austella L. (Jack) Gaut, and brother, Howard R. (Roberta) Shirey. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Maegan Light, Pamela D. Stillings, Christian A. Shirey, Alik M. Hotard, Jerry J. LaPorte, great-grandchildren; Laynah Shirey and Allison M. Taylor, and host of other family and friends. Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel immediately following the visitation.
