Esther Jewel Hamilton entered this world on May 15, 1924 in Bryant, Arkansas as the daughter of Rev. Andrew Wilson Hamilton and Bessie Hughes Hamilton and departed peacefully, as Jewel Hamilton Adams – Heblon, on February 24, 2022 in Mobile, AL at age 97. Jewel, a long-time resident and well-known civic leader and champion here in Mobile, AL, was most recently preceded in death by her second husband, Irwin Heblon on February 22, 2002.
Jewel’s first husband of 53 years, and father of their three children, was Sherley Bain Adams, who preceded Jewel in death on January 2, 1995. Sherley and Jewel Adams are survived by 3 children – Sherley Lewis Adams (wife, Jan), Andrew Wilson Hamilton Adams (wife, Martha) and Carol Lynn Adams Dewrell (husband, Don) - 10 grandchildren – Michelle Adams Burden, Bain Williamson Adams (wife, Kandice), Matthew Hamilton Adams, Katherine Adams Clemmons (husband, Michael), Holly Elizabeth Lovett, Jill Dewrell Dickinson (husband, Donnie), Dustin Ray Dewrell (wife, Lacy), Denton Larkin Dewrell (wife, Jenny), Andrew Hewett Adams (wife, Savanne), and Tyler Roy Morgan (wife, Amber) - and 20 great-grandchildren - John Patrick Burden, Jr (wife, Jessalyn), William Garrett Burden, Stephen Jacob Burden, Riley Bain Adams, Savanah Barnett, Mary Barnett, Olivia Jewel Adams, Isabelle Bain Adams, Gabrielle Reese Adams, MichaelBain Clemmons, Jack Hamilton Lovett, Abby Elizabeth Lovett, Shelley Copeland (daughter, Madison Bishop), Drake Dewrell, Molly Dewrell, Shep Dewrell, Brayden Hamilton Adams, Meliah Savanne Adams, Marielle Emily Adams, and Wynn Morgan - as a result of that union.
Jewel Adams, a 40-year veteran of the real estate industry and a top-producing female real estate agent, industry leader and brokerage owner long before her time, will be remembered as a pioneer for female entrepreneurs as well as a gracious woman of Southern charm and quiet persistence. Listed in “Personalities of the South,” “Who’s Who of America,” and Named as Mobile’s Outstanding Career Woman in 1973, Jewel’s leadership by example and commitment to this community are both pervasive and commendable on every level.
Jewel was also a champion golfer and integral, with her husband Sherley, in the founding, leadership and growth of Skyline Country Club (now Heron Lakes) where she is recognized as a member emeritus today.
Ms. Adams, forever the researcher and family historian, intensely proud of her American heritage, was an active member of many historic and ancestral societies: The Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, The Jamestown Society, The National Society of Magna Charta Dames, and, by virtue of her descendance from President Thomas Jefferson, Presidential Families of America.
A woman of long-standing and steadfast faith, Jewel and her husband Sherley joined Dauphin Way United Methodist Church in 1954, where, after 68 years of service and membership, Ms. Adams is now recognized as a lifetime member of the Honorary Board of Stewards.
The life, memory and contributions of Jewel Adams-Heblon will be honored at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 3 at 1pm with visitation preceding from 12pm to 1pm. Services will be open to the public and all friends are welcome to attend.
