Joan Aurelia Macon, the youngest child of Floy Verner Macon, Sr. and Thelma Kearley Macon, passed away on June 11, 2019. She was born at the old Mobile Infirmary on July 24th, 1936.

Joan graduated from Murphy High School in 1953 and then attended the University of Alabama for two years before traveling to Europe, Sightseeing and occasionally doing secretarial work as the several U. S. Army bases so she could extend her sightseeing more than originally planned, returning home after almost a year abroad. Joan opened and operated several businesses in Mobile, including “Whoops” Young Fashions and Swenson’s Marble Slab Ice Cream Store, both in Bel-Air Mall, as well as working in insurance sales later in her career.

Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her siblings Floy Verner Macon, Jr., Janice Macon McCoy, Yvonne Macon Bramlett, Paul Vernon Macon, and Claris Macon McDaniel.

She is survived by her older sister, Patricia Macon Lyon, and by her nephews and nieces; Chandler Bramlett, Tom Bramlett. Skip Macon, Henry Macon, Caroline Montalban, Sara Clark, BJ Lyon, Jimmy Lyon, Tricia Garstecki, Nancy Haas, Victoria Stimpson, Ashley Woods, Dan McDaniel, Mark McDaniel, Scott McDaniel, Paul McDaniel and Claris Feibelman.

She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Mobile and truly loved the Lord. Joan really enjoyed being a part of her large extended family, and she devoted many years of her adult life helping her mother, who spent her last years in Joan’s home. Joan was also an animal lover and always had multiple cats and dogs that gave her much joy.

Many thanks to all her wonderful caregivers and staff at Atria Regency, where she lived for almost two years, and the caregivers at Springhill Manor Nursing Home where she spent the last few weeks, and for her special friends, Brenda and Mona.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 14th at 11 A.M. in the Chapel at Pine Crest with burial to follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her memory be directed to the Alabama Baptist Children’s Home (512 Grelot Road 36615), First Baptist Church of Mobile (806 Government St. 36602), Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (34 Washington St., Wellesley Hills, MA), or the SPCA (620 Ziegler Circle W. 36608).
