
Visitation will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 17, at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin St. in Mobile, AL. followed by chapel services at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 17, at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin St. in Mobile, AL. with Rev. Dr. T. J. Mashburn officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Baptist Cemetery in Century, FL., at 1:30 p.m.
John (Abe) was born in Charlotte, N.C., to John and Edna Abernathy on September 12, 1940. He graduated from high school in Kalamazoo, MI. John graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in education and married Linda Ruth Hall in 1965. He later graduated with a master’s degree in teaching from Emory University. He worked as a high school chemistry teacher for 11 years, most of those years at Woodward Academy in College Park, GA., before changing careers to working as a computer programmer analyst. He worked for NCR in Georgia, as well as the Mobile Infirmary.
John was involved in church activities in East Point, GA, including being a lay minister at Headland Heights United Methodist Church, and an active member of Lafitte Baptist Church in Saraland, AL.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edna Abernathy, his sister, Mary Nancy Cooper, and his first wife, Linda Ruth Abernathy.
John is survived by his wife Linda Reynolds Abernathy, his daughter Katherine Leigh Abernathy, Ph.D., bonus children Lori Leathers, (husband Danny Leathers), and Joey Alexander, his grandchildren Margaret Ruth Abernathy, Joseph Leathers, Douglas Leathers, Meghan Leathers, and Morgan Alexander-Coster and her wife Kiley.
Pallbearers will be Danny Leathers, Joseph Leathers, Douglas Leathers, Charlie Eiland, Rod Marti, Bo Reynolds and Ben Reynolds.
