John Charles Scribner Pierce Jr.

To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving mother and father, Katie and John; his twin sister, Ellie; grandparents, Don and Faye Pierce of Mobile, Billy and Harriett Hogue and his Great Aunt, Genevieve O'Neal of Chattanooga, aunts, uncles, cousins and many beloved friends.

Chas was born on June 3, 1998 and received the Sacrament of Baptism at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. After Pre-K and Kindergarten at UMS-Wright Preparatory School, he attended St. Luke's Episcopal School through the Fourth Grade. He was an outstanding student who enjoyed soccer, basketball and many extracurricular activities. Chas was diagnosed with CNS Germinoma, a brain cancer, in the summer of 2009 at UAB Children's Hospital in Birmingham, where the caring physicians, nurses and staff tirelessly worked to help him fight the disease. Between treatments, he returned to Mobile to continue his education. He remained a member of the St. Luke's family but attended the Southwest Alabama Regional School for the Deaf and Blind after his vision and ability to walk were taken by disease, chemotherapy, and radiation. For two years he was lovingly taught by the faculty there, particularly Charise Walley.

Chas felt blessed with a wonderful family, schools, teachers and friends, including Annie Gwin and Angie Pischek, who were instrumental in caring for him. He enjoyed painting and country music, especially that of Brad Paisley, who he met in Birmingham between radiation treatments through the generous efforts of Ms. Walley, WKSJ and Magic Moments.

Throughout his life, Chas personified patience and courage. He believed in serving others by being an example of strength and grace. Even in the darkest hours, he always had a bright smile, a wonderful sense of humor and a profound faith that his life was in God's hands.

Chas' family will celebrate his life and commend him to everlasting peace through the Sacrament of Communion and Rite of Christian Burial. Friends are invited to a visitation at St. Luke's Episcopal Church Parish Hall on Japonica Lane from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 7th. Interment will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials in Chas' honor to the Southwest Alabama Regional School for the Deaf and Blind and St. Luke's Episcopal School in Mobile, Alabama.
