Katharine Phillips Singer
June 28, 1923 – November 23, 2019
Katharine Phillips Singer, 96, passed away in Mobile, AL on Saturday, November 23, 2019. Katharine was born to Sidney C. Phillips, Sr. and Katharine Tucker Phillips on June 28, 1923 in Mobile. A member of the Great Generation, she worked in the nursery of shipyards during WWII, attending the children of the women employed there. Katharine graduated Auburn in 1944 as a member of the Chi Omega sorority, with a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Nutrition and Foods. She taught second grade and home economics in Mobile. Katharine was also an Airline Stewardess for Waterman Airlines. For the extent of her working life, she was an antiques dealer here in Mobile, specializing in linens, earning her the title “Linen Lady”. Katharine enjoyed sewing and baking – she was famous for her chocolate cake. She was extremely patriotic, and she was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. However, Katharine’s passion was history. She would read books, watch the History Channel, the Military Channel – she and her husband would stop at historical sites on road trips with their two daughters – and this hobby and interest would lead her to one of the things people know her most for, her participation in a documentary made by Ken Burns called “The War”. Katharine never passed up an opportunity to give a historical speech. She was a member of First Baptist Church Mobile. Katharine was an incredibly sharp, animated, generous and loving woman, and will be greatly missed. Katharine joined her husband of 50 years, Harvey F. Singer as well as her parents, Sidney C. Phillips, Sr. and Katharine Tucker Phillips; and brother, Dr. Sidney C. Phillips, Jr. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Katharine Singer Agnew (David Michael) and Susan Singer Pearson (David Elton); four grandchildren, Dr. Robert Christopher Rothaar (Dr. Susan Kearney), Katharine Elizabeth Rothaar, Jenny Pearson Herman (Robert Samuel Jr.), and Jonathan David Pearson (Lisa Tucker); eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Rev. John W. Phillips (Ann); as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other cherished family and friends. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2019 at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, AL with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project: www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
