Born Margaret Katherine (Kaye) McDonald to Grillis and Marguerite Horne McDonald on May 5, 1934, in Jackson, MS. She was orphaned at an early age and legally adopted by her Mother’s first cousin, Katye Horne Pierce, in Laurel, MS. She grew up there from the age of five, lucky to find herself in a neighborhood with six little girls her age who all became long time friends.
Kaye’s school years were very happy. She excelled academically (spoke three languages : English, Latin, and pig Latin) and graduated two years early. Laurel was a very socially active town, and there were many parties and dances. Kaye was the high school “Queen of Beauty “ and the DeMolay Sweetheart, and enjoyed a wonderful social life. She met her future husband, Ralph Huston Mims, when he came from Alabama to attend the local junior college on a football scholarship. Ralph and his roommate saw Kaye at a party. The roommate said “I’m going to ask her out”. Ralph said “I’m going to marry her”! And he did, in 1953. They moved to Panama City, FL, when he finished university in 1955, along with their two month old son. Kaye was active in the Jayceettes , dancing in Follies for the big fundraiser. They subsequently lived in Pine Bluff, AR, Mobile, AL, and Wilton, CT, making many wonderful friends along the way. Kaye was always involved with her church and her children. She was a Deacon and Elder in her church and received life membership honor from the Presbyterian Women. She was a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader, and transportation for many sports activities. Kaye attended every activity in which her children participated.
Kaye was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Mims, her sisters Ann B. Norton and Jeanne Pierce, and brother Bill Babcock. She is survived by Scotty Mims (Ann)of Orange Beach, AL, Leslie Cameron of Coppell, TX, and Don Mims (Susan) of Shalimar, FL. Grandchildren are Alison, Elizabeth, and Kevin Mims, Ellen Cameron Crowley (Patrick) and Laura Leigh Cameron Cashel (Matthew), and Caitlin and Alexandra Mims. There is one great grandchild. We will be forever grateful that we celebrated her 90th birthday in May, with almost all family attending.
