Leo Griffin

Bro. Leo Griffin Sr “Sonny” was born in Prichard, Alabama on March 28, 1947, to Kemp Perry and Pauline Griffin. Leo was the first born of two children. Pauline later married Alfred Monley and he raised Leo as his own.

Bro. Leo accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church where he was a member of the Usher Board. He received his early education with the Mobile County School System and graduated from Mattie T. Blount High School in 1965. After graduation, Leo joined the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War.

After being honorably discharged from the United States Navy, Leo moved to Detroit, Michigan where he was united in marriage with Regina Guy on March 22, 1967, and to this union three sons were born; Michael, Brian, Leo and a daughter Latwana that he raised as his own. He was employed by General Motors and was a member of Local 909 until he returned to Mobile in 1985.

Leo enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed coming to Detroit to spend the warm months with his grandchildren. Leo’s stern, yet charming personality and sharp whit, will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him.

On Sunday, February 26, 2023, God came and took Leo back home. He was preceded in death by his loving mother Pauline, father Kemp, stepfather Alfred and wife Pauline.

He leaves to cherish wonderful memories: his 5 children; Latwana, Michael(Machelle), Brian(Tracey), Leo Jr.(Christie), and Latyia(Dewon). 15 grandchildren; Parie, Regina, Brian, Brandon, Cheyna, Ashley, Brione, Cedric, Ravyn, Tristyn, Leo III, Kaniya, Braelin, Michael Jr, and Anthony. 7 great grandchildren. His one and only sister Paulette who was his dedicated and devoted caregiver. One niece Jarmelya and one nephew William IV. And a host of relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Prichard, Alabama, with a funeral service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
