The Reverend Doctor Leo Dudley Wilson passed away on January 12, 2021. He was born September 2, 1930 to Leo Olice and Berniece Elizabeth Wright Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving sister Cora Juanice Wilson Roepke, his dear daughter Frances
Grace Wilson Lester, and his beloved wife Inez Brown Wilson.
He attended Howard College (Samford University), Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and San Francisco Theological Seminary, with post graduate work at Yale and Oxford University. He served on the board of trustees at Judson College, William Carey College, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and numerous civic organizations. He served as a pastor in Kentucky, Alabama, and Texas, and as founding pastor of Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. He retired from ministry at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. He was a lifelong advocate of civil rights and social justice.
He was a greatly beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, pastor, and friend. He is survived by a loving family who will love and cherish his memory and will serve as his legacy: Daughters Dr. Cynthia Lee Wilson and Elizabeth Wright Wilson Peterson, son Jeffrey Scott Wilson (Cindy); grandchildren Buz Wilcoxon (Ryann), Andy Wilcoxon (Jilli), Scott Wilson (Dana), Kip Wilson, Lee Wilson, Shelby Wilson, Betsy Peterson Otis (Patrick), Bobby Peterson (Mimi), Anne Wilson Peterson, Trey Lester, Wil Lester, and Gracie Lester; great-grandchildren Wright Wilcoxon, Evans Wilcoxon, Archer Wilcoxon, Liza Hayes Wilcoxon, Lohi Wilcoxon, Wilson Wilcoxon, Rhodes Wilson, Reeves Wilson, Jack Otis, Will Otis, Anne Harper Peterson, and Olivia Peterson, brother Jack Henley Wilson (Marianne), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 18, at 2:00 p.m. at Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile. The service will be led by his grandson The Reverend Dr. Buz Wilcoxon.
