Lloyd Wray Black was born on August 8, 1928 and passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at the age of 93. Lloyd was born in Ackerman, Mississippi. He was a member of Kingswood United Methodist Church. He served in the US Air force for four years. After his discharge he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Master’s Degree in Administration from Mississippi State University. He moved to Mobile, AL in 1955 starting his career as a History teacher at Vigor High School. He served as the principal at a number of schools in Mobile County for many years . Lloyd made a huge impact on his student’s lives and was often stopped by former students to reminisce. He led with his heart and always went above and beyond for his students whether it be grants, scholarships, or disciplinary actions to help them excel in life.
Lloyd had many talents and hobbies that he truly enjoyed including wood working, going to the gym, photography and traveling. He spent many hours working with the youth and often donated his time and money to local charities and youth groups. Most memorable are Blue Lake United Methodist Conference Center in Andalusia, AL and West Wilmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Ina Black, his first wife Ettie B. (Bunnie), brothers Alvin and Roy Black, sisters Lera Black Jones and Dama Black Johnson, and daughter Peggy Vaughn.
He is survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth Black, a special granddaughter Peggy Renee Courtney, daughters Pamela Gregg and Regina Davis. He had several generations of grandchildren and great grandchildren: Joey, Joey Jr., Matthew, Melanie, Sara, Caleb, Cody, Emerson, Julian, Aubrey, Norah, Sophia, and Mason.
Lloyd had many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly and who loved him in return to include Wanda McKnight, and especially enjoyed the visits of Ina Francis Rigby, Sandra Jones Reid, Linda Jones Edwards, Pat Hunt Fulgham, William Floyd Jones and James Allen Jones.
Lloyd never met a stranger and to know him was to love him. He was a great storyteller and could sit for hours with a captive audience. He will be greatly missed by many.
Visitation will be at Kingswood United Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, beginning at 12:00 noon with funeral at 1:00 pm. Burial will be at Pine Crest Cemetery West. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Blue Lake United Methodist Conference Center or Kingswood United Methodist Church. Funeral arrangements handled by Radney Funeral Home, Dauphin Street.
