

Louis Joseph Knowles was born July 7, 1925 in Mobile, AL. He graduated from McGill Institute in 1944, then attended Spring Hill College. He served with the United States Army, and was wounded while stationed in Florence, Italy during WWII, earning him a Purple Heart. Mr. Knowles also received the World War II Victory Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. He retired from South Central Bell/Bellsouth after 33 years. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time playing golf, fishing, and attending air shows with his family. Mr. Knowles was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, and participated in the Honor flight from Mobile to Washington D.C. He was a member of St. Pius X. Mr. Knowles was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Knowles and Essimia Imsand Knowles; brothers, Bernard Knowles, Ralph J. Knowles, and John Edward Knowles; and sisters, Helen Marie Constantine, and Sister Melva Elizabeth Knowles. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Jayne Hunt Knowles; son, Louis (Dana) Knowles; daughters, Patricia (Ray) Gibson, Priscilla (Tommy) Burges, and Margaret (Bruce) Miller; grandsons, Brian Knowles and Marc Knowles; granddaughters, Jennifer Levy, Marie Burges, and Jessica Miller; great-grandchildren, Blaine, Hanna, Taylor, and Christopher; sister-in-law, Mable Claire Reeves; cousin, William T. Reeves; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many long-time dear friends. Visitation for Mr. Knowles will be held from 1-2 p.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway on Monday, May 1, 2017, with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery West on Snow Road.
