She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Wiggs Haas and her husband, James (Jamie) Twilley, with whom she resided, and her granddaughter, Alysia Johnston, presently residing in Laurel, Maryland. She was also survived by three nieces, one nephew, and cousins in Mobile, Al., California, New Mexico, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas.
Lucy also leaves behind her closest friends, Carol Wiest and her mother, Helen Glendall, age 103.Over the course of her life, Lucy resided in Memphis, Tennessee where she and her husband met at Immaculate Conception High School and married after Albert’s return from completing his duty serving his country in the United States Army and his fight against the Nazis in World War 2. Lucy experienced living in many places with her husband. She resided in New Iberia and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Gassett Farm in Brickeys, Arkansas, population 56. She subsequently relocated to Mobile where she became a member of Little Flower and St.Dominic Catholic churches. After her husband’s passing, she moved to Fairhope, Alabama in her 70’s where she resided and was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church until the last few years when she chose to return to Mobile to reside with her daughter and son-in-law. She continued the practice of her Catholic faith by the kindness of Fr. Prabu of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church by his visits with her in her home to give her her sacraments. The most important job of her life were the 16 years she spent being a stay at home mother. After that, she obtained her Real Estate license and worked for Roberts Brother’s in the 1980’s; she assisted her brother-in-law, R. H. Sassaman, in his business by providing bookkeeping services; she provided similar services to the Quarter Note and, most importantly, bookkeeping services for her daughter’s law firm until she retired at age 71 so that she could travel the world with her husband. Lucy was multi-talented and volunteered in numerous activities. She served as a Girl Scout leader for her daughter’s troop for 7 years taking girls to Scoutshire Woods, swimming and on bike riding trails. Her husband, an Eagle Scout, taught her how to make camp fires and techniques she taught the girls on how to survive in the woods. She was an avid water skier; president of Jayceetts; PTA president; head room mother; chauffeur for children’s choir performances at churches and on television. Lucy was an active member and leader for the then Murphy High School Band Boosters; a certified baton twirling contest director by the National Baton Twirling Association and used this certification to conduct baton twirling contests at Murphy High School and Theodore High School which enabled them to raise money for new band uniforms, instruments and repair. This aided the Murphy High School band in winning many marching band competitions. She was instrumental in founding and supporting the first high school band contest in Mobile, Alabama at Ladd Stadium. Some of the many talents and interests Lucy enjoyed were being an avid reader, seamstress, needle point, oil painting, cooking, embroidery, costume designing (doing all the bead work required by hand), gardening, playing bridge and all kinds of cards. Lucy loved the water, boating, fishing with the family; she loved to sing and to listen to music of many varieties; she was a tap dancer and 1940’s swing dancer—often dancing while nobody was watching. Lucy was a proud member of the Baldwin County Senior Travel Club for over 20 years where she had many friends and was a founding member of the Red Hats group in Fairhope, Alabama called “The Shady Ladies” participating in parades, travels, and many luncheons. Lucy will be greatly missed by all those whose hearts she touched.
