It is with great sadness, yet comforted by our faith in the resurrection, the news of the falling asleep of our sister in Christ, Margaro (Rita) Tziotis. Rita passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.
Rita Tziotis, born to Andreas and Zoe Venardou on February 23, 1946, in Piraeus, Greece, her life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and service.
Rita met the love of her life, Stavros Dometios Tziotis,1965, in Piraeus, Greece and they married in a beautiful ceremony that marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership. The couple moved to Mobile, Alabama, where they started their family, welcoming their daughter Ourania in January 1966. Their joy doubled with the birth of their son Andreas in June 1970, following their return to Greece. Thereafter, the Tziotis family moved back to Mobile to begin their life here in the States.
A pillar of strength and love, Rita raised her family with unwavering faith and love for our Lord and her family. She was actively involved in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, particularly with the Daughters of Penelope and Philoptochos. Her voice, a harmonious blend of faith and joy, graced the church choir, and her passion for Greek culture shone brightly as she taught Greek dance. Rita's culinary skills were legendary; she not only cooked for the Greek school but also helped lead the cooking for the Greek festival and seasonal baking.
Rita's love for travel, gardening, cooking, and singing was matched by her love for being a world-class Yiayia. Her presence brought a unique warmth and vibrancy wherever she went. Most importantly, she was a faithful Orthodox Christian who made liturgy and the reception of the Eucharist a priority in her life. Receiving the Eucharist regularly, and in keeping with her joy and exuding light and love for people, she always enjoyed the fellowship that followed the services.
She leaves behind a loving family: her husband Steve, her daughter Ourania, her son Andreas (Michele), and her cherished grandchildren Brent, Zoe, Lex, Markella, Elias, and Nikos, along with her godchildren. Rita's absence leaves a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Penelope House, in Rita's memory. Her legacy of love, compassion, and community will continue to inspire and live on in the hearts of many.
Rita Tziotis will be profoundly missed but her spirit will continue to guide and comfort those she loved. May her memory be eternal!
