OBITUARY

Ms. Marvell Idella Cantrell

September 18, 1926February 13, 2020

Marvell Idella Martin Cantrell came into the world in Mobile, AL on September 18, 1926 as a hurricane was bearing down on the city. She left peacefully on February 13, 2020.

She lived a full life in Mobile, graduating from Bishop Toolen High School in 1944 before enlisting in the US Army Nurse Corps for the war effort. While receiving her training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, the war ended before she had the opportunity to serve her duty. She continued to work as a nurse for over 40 years at local hospitals, for private practices, and at The Little Sisters of the Poor Sacred Heart Residence. After working at Little Sisters’ for 24 years, she retired from her Night Supervisor position.

She delighted everyone she met with her easy smile, quick wit, and memorable stories.

Marvell was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Harold and Idella Clyatt Martin; son, V. Craig Cantrell; granddaughter, Christine “Crissy" Lucas-Hughes; and brothers, John, Guy, and William Martin. She is survived by her daughter, Lanora “Noni” Stokes (Danny); granddaughter, Hope Smitherman (Patrick); great-granddaughters Keelyn and Taryn Hughes; sister, Mary Taylor; and a plethora of nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to acknowledge the care and concern given to Mrs. Cantrell by Catherine Johnson and Prisca Mathorin, who we don’t know what we would have done without.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 AM February 15, 2020 at Pine Crest Cemetery. Pallbearers are Danny Stokes, Pat Smitherman, Greg Martin, Timothy Martin, Connor Walton, and William Heathcock. Honorary Pallbearer is Bryan Taylor.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Marvell Cantrell’s honor be made to The Little Sisters of the Poor, 1655 McGill Ave, Mobile, AL 36604.
