
Marvin Curtis Johns, Sr., native and long time resident of Mobile, AL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 5, 2015. He was born December 12, 1927, to Johanna Elizabeth “Bessie” Daniel Johns and Curtis Lafayette Johns. Marvin, our “Grarv,” was dearly loved by his family and many friends and his faith in God was an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Marvin was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, June Marie Johnson Johns. He is survived by his six children, Judith Johns-Robbert (Randy), Cantonment, FL; Marvin Johns, Jr. (Sally), Raleigh, NC; Michael Johns (Dolly), Syracuse, NY; Jerry Johns (Leslie), Summerdale, AL; Marie Bridges (Paul), Mobile, AL; and Patrick Johns (Connie), Mobile, AL; and his twelve grandchildren, Suzanne Robbert, Cantonment, FL; Ria Johns (Craig Rothgery), Denver, CO; Sam Johns (Lauren), Raleigh, NC; Andrew Johns (Sara), Normal, IL; Ellis Bridges (fiance, Riley McDuff), Mobile, AL; Nicholas Johns, Syracuse, NY; Lindsay Johns Will (Tim), Granger, IN; Johanna (Hanna) Johns, Austin, TX; Morgan Johns Eddins (Bart) Mobile, AL; Therese Bridges, Mobile, AL; Emily Johns, Raleigh, NC; and Logan Johns McConnell (Michael), Mobile, AL. Marvin is survived by five great-grandchildren, Sophie and Sadie Johns (Normal, IL), James and June Will (Granger, IN), and Knox Eddins (Mobile).
Marvin graduated from McGill Institute class of 1946 and was employed at GAF (Ruberoid), retiring after 43 years as district sales manager in 1990. In retirement Marvin and June travelled to England, France, Mexico, Bahamas, Japan, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Germany, Austria, Canada, Israel, Italy, Alaska, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
He was ordained to the Diaconate of the Mobile Diocese in December 2001, serving St. Ignatius parish, Catholic Engaged Encounter and as hospital chaplain for fifteen years.
Marvin was very active in church parishes, Little Flower and St. Ignatius. He also enjoyed many years of Cecilian Choral, Toastmasters, Knights of Columbus and various civic clubs. He loved fishing and shrimping at his beloved “Johns Secour” retirement cabin in Baldwin county where he authored a widower’s memoir One Life, One Partner, Many Memories. He will be dearly missed by all that came to know him.
Visitation is Friday, November 13 from 9:30-11 AM at the Marian Center at St. Ignatius followed by Funeral service at 11 AM at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 3704 Springhill Ave., Mobile, AL 36608 followed by interment at Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Ignatius Parish in memory of Marvin and June Johns.
