Mary was born in Hegargel, Alabama to Archie Paul and Lillie Mae Wiggins Paul. She is preceded her homecoming by both parents, her husband of 53 years Wilbert McKay, twin sister Martha Nilson, sister Julia Mae Minchew, sister Sarah Bishop, grandson Sean McKay, and great granddaughter Chloe Ann Qualls. A joyous homecoming indeed. She is survived by her brother Buddy Paul, sister Vivian Burkley, three sons, Steven McKay (Cathy McKay), Harvey McKay (Christy McKay) and Billy McKay, three grandsons James Qualls (Jenny Qualls), Adam McKay and Patrick McKay, one granddaughter, Stevi Harris (Charles Harris). She was blessed with five great grandsons and three great granddaughters. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mary was born in a small town, Hegargel, in Alabama. Her family moved to Summerdale, AL when she was very young. She often spoke of growing up in that small farming community with fond memories. She had stories of the soda fountain in Foley, AL and the drive in theater. She told the story of how she met and married her husband, Wilbert. They moved to Mobile, AL and raised their three boys there.
Mary didn’t have mounds of earthly treasure as most would know it. Her treasure was her family. Each child, grandchild and great grandchild was a jewel in her crown. She would often join in playing kickball, hide and seek or tag with her grandchildren. They would come home excitedly telling anyone who would listen about their adventures with Grandma. She was their jewel.
Mary loved to listen to and sing old country/bluegrass music. She would often sing familiar songs that stirred the heart. She once said to sing old gospel songs made her feel closer to Jesus. She loved the Lord. She enjoyed going to church and Bible study. She knew the Lord and was ready for her homecoming.
Mary will be missed but never forgotten. When we see a beautiful sunrise or sunset her love will be there. When we hear an old song from days gone by, her voice will be there. When we hug one of our children or grandchildren her embrace will be there. When sadness overtakes us from missing Mary we need to remember she isn’t gone she just went home. She is happy. She is with Jesus.
Visitation will be held at Pinecrest Funeral Home on Saturday, October 26, 2024. The family will assemble from 12pm until 1 pm. They will receive friends from 1pm to 2pm. The funeral will be held in the chapel at 2pm and the graveside will be at 2:45pm.
