Mary Ross Parker, widow of the late Dr. Benjamin F. Parker, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, January 12, 2019. Mrs. Parker, a resident of New Orleans for 54 years, was 96. She had been a resident of Spanish Fort, AL for the past 14 years. Mary was born in London, England, attended Mills College in Oakland, CA, and graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in Occupational Therapy in 1945. She worked at Ochsner Medical Center for 16 years and served on the Orleans Parish Board of Medical Examiners for Occupational Therapy.
Mary was very involved in New Orleans life. She was ordained as an elder in the St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in 1970, a member of the Metairie Country Club, Orleans Parish Medical Auxiliary, Board of De Paul Hospital Guild, Tulane Women Association, Tulane Hospital Auxiliary, Volunteer Committee of NOMA, The Zoo and Aquarium, P.E.O. Chapter Q Women's Guild of the N. O. Opera Association, past president of Audubon Garden Club and Avenue Investment Clubs, and was listed in Who's Who-American Women 1970.
Mary Parker is survived by her daughter, Melissa Parker Weltin and husband, William Weltin of Demopolis, AL, and granddaughter Elizabeth Barkley Weltin, and by her son, David Emory Parker of Fort Walton Beach, FL, granddaughter, Katherine McLendon Parker and husband Ed Cheatham and great grandson Julian Cheatham, grandson Benjamin Ross Parker and wife Christina Parker and great-grandchildren, Abigail and James Parker and companion Tommy V. Shackelford. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 300 N. Strawberry Avenue, Demopolis, AL 36732.
