

Matt P. Antoine – a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama died on January 20, 2013, at the age of 88 at a local hospital surrounded by his family. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was a true gentleman, a man of great character and integrity, and will be greatly missed.
Following his 1942 graduation from Murphy High School, he entered the U.S. Navy. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific aboard the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Hickox as a fire controller. Returning to Mobile, he was employed with Alabama Power Company for three years. In 1948, as an electrician, he became a civilian employee with the U.S. Coast Guard at Choctaw Point in Mobile. Several years later, as Civil Engineer of the base, he was instrumental in the relocation of that facility to the Mobile Ocean Terminal at Brookley Field. His expertise in aids to navigation took him throughout the Eighth Coast Guard District. He retired after 35 years of service.
He was a faithful member of First Independent Methodist Church for many years, but most recently attended Riverside Baptist Church. Mr. Antoine was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Eloise Hamilton Antoine; his parents, Matthew Otto Antoine and Elma Sizemore Antoine; and three sisters, Idonia A. Rhoads, Gladys A. Moore, and Madelyn A. Zoghby. He is survived by two daughters, Deborah A. Dial and Cynthia A. (Charles) Beverly; six grandchildren, Matthew T. (Stephanie) Dial, Adam H. (Kelly) Dial, Lauren E. Dial, Danielle B. (Dan) Lowinger, Rebecca B. (Robert) Wein, and Benjamin W. Beverly; six great-grandchildren, Harrison T. Dial, Addison C. Dial, Asher H. Dial, Libby C. Dial, W. Case Wein, and Finn H. Wein; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at 12 noon. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the service hour. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
