When his mother found out she was pregnant with a boy, she was overjoyed. The only name that came to her for him was “Matthew”, which means “gift of God”. He has truly been God’s gift to her and her family. Their grief will be for this time on earth only since we have assurance that they will be reunited with him for eternity in heaven with God.
He was a happy baby, whose smile was like sunshine. As a young boy, Matthew was included in everything Nancy was doing. When she went back to college to get her Master’s in Music he became the mascot of her music fraternity. When she taught show choir in the high schools, he would dress up as different characters and participate in the performances. As he got older he would help her transport music instruments, scenery and help set up the technical equipment for the performances throughout her teaching career.
He was a lifelong member of Christ Anglican Church, participating in Sunday school, vacation Bible school, and the many activities of the youth group. He was active in the church and helped out in any area where there was a need.
Matthew grew up and lived with his mother in the Fortenberry family home where his beloved grandparents, William and Barbara Fortenberry were an integral part of his daily life. He helped his mother care for them as they aged in the last years of their life. Matthew was a gracious host to family and friends who came to visit the family home. He would greet them and spend time with them during their visit.
Matthew was extremely intelligent, widely read, and had a keen wit. He built his own computer, and used it to connect with friends from all over the world. He also took care of all the electronics in the house, hooking up and maintaining a system to control the electronic equipment, lights, security, and communications for the home to make his bedridden grandmother more comfortable and secure.
Matthew is survived by his mother, Nancy Fortenberry Titko, his aunt, Pamela Mendel (Darren), and uncles Bill Fortenberry (Monica) and Bob Fortenberry (Martha) and many cousins. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents Chuck and Doris Titko, his good friends Josh Irby and Matthew Graham, and his precious fur babies Seraphim (Sera) and Cherubim (Cheri).
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Barbara Fortenberry, his aunt and uncle, Susanne F. and George C. Wood and his cousin David Wood.
The Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on April 26, 2024 at 1pm at Christ Anglican Church on Halls Mill Road in Mobile, AL. Instead of flowers, donations may be sent in honor of Matthew Titko to Christ Anglican Church, 3275 Halls Mill Road, Mobile, AL 36606, marked “Project Community Outreach” or “Discretionary Fund” to help those in need. Helping others in need was a passion of his.
