Allen was born in Tanner Williams, where he was raised on a farm and taught a strong work ethic and Christian values. He graduated from Semmes High School, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from the College of Agriculture at Louisiana State University. After college, he taught high school, worked at Auburn Ornamental Horticulture Research Center, managed nurseries and landscaping businesses, and in 1981, started his own landscaping business, from which he retired in 2015. Allen was a lifelong and faithful member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church where he served as deacon, treasurer, adult Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years, and as an editor of the Faithway Sunday School literature. Allen began each day with Bible study and prayer, and especially enjoyed being outdoors, working his garden.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Dewitt and Iva Pierce Driskell, siblings Bertran Driskell, Ralph Driskell, Murray Driskell, Linwood Driskell, Blake Driskell, Unavay Byrd, Lois Pierce, and Betty Vickery. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Rowell Driskell, their two children, Sharon (Carl) Dickens, and Brian (Stacey) Driskell, grandson, Graham (Zelda) Driskell, siblings Julette Smith, Agnes Goff, Everette (Bonita) Driskell, and Basil Driskell, numerous nephews and nieces, other family members, and friends.
A visitation for Allen will be held Monday, August 21, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St, Mobile, AL 36606. A 2nd visitation will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed by funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Palestine Baptist Church, Wilmer, Alabama.
Interment to follow in Palestine Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palestine Missionary Baptist Church, Post Office Box 17, Wilmer, Alabama 36587.
