Mrs. Rooney attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in elementary and middle school and graduated from Bishop Toolen High School in 1949. A strong member of the Catholic faith, she was a parishioner of Little Flower Catholic Church where she was an altar server, was a member of the ACCW, and sang in the choir. She was also a member and past president of the Legion of Mary. Mrs. Rooney was also a member of the Cecilian Chorale, eventually serving as its director. She enjoyed bowling, swimming, and basketball which she played in high school and as a member of a state league in which she later coached.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Enholm Hyland and Jessie Lorena Lawrence Hyland; siblings, Irma Jones, Sam Hyland, Willie Hyland, Victor Hyland, Norman Hyland, Rosalie Baker, Helen Hamlin, and Jessie Stockton; husband of 43 years, George Leo Rooney, Jr; and granddaughter, Raphaella Marie Barrantes. She is survived by her daughter, Jeannie Marie Rooney (Juancarlos Barrantes); granddaughters, Arianna Marie Julietta Barrantes, Gabriella Bianca Barrantes, and Isabella KarinaTeresa Barrantes; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Little Flower Catholic Church on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at 12 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Catholic Cemetery.
